Is is possible to write a poem, that you can read backwards?
Poem: Your light
Even in my darkest times
My hardest times in life
I think every poem can be read backwards. Sometimes the meaning of the original poem changes, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve read some poems backwards and it doesn’t always work out. The sentences are out of tune, but still, the feeling is there.
I looked online for some examples of forwards/backwards poems… And to my surprise, there were websites describing how to write a poem that can be read backwards. In my opinion, a poem has to come from the heart, from your own feelings. If you have to think about ‘the rules’ to write a backwards poem, it isn’t a true poem. If you are really trying to write something that can be read in two different ways, it isn’t an honest poem.
Maybe I’m in a state of mind that I think there shouldn’t be any rules for poetry. Maybe tomorrow my opinion is changed. But for now, I think you should write by heart, not by mind. If it can be read backwards, that’s a plus. If it can’t, than so be it.
Backwards or forwards, a poem has it’s own meaning. It can be read both ways.
